5、etailstoreswerefluctuating,butthevariabilitieswerecertainlynotexcessive.However,astheyexaminedthedistributors'orders,theexecutivesweresurprisedbythedegreeofvariability.WhentheylookedatP&G'sordersofmaterialstotheirsuppliers,suchas3M,theydiscoveredthattheswingswer
6、eevengreater.Atfirstglance,thevariabilitiesdidnotmakesense.Whiletheconsumers,inthiscase,thebabies,consumeddiapersatasteadyrate,thedemandordervariabilitiesinthesupplychainwereamplifiedastheymovedupthesupplychain.P&Gcalledthisphenomenonthe"bullwhip"effect.(Insomei
