2、examinedownershiptypeasavariabletoclassifyfirmsinanindustry.UsingChinesefirmsofdifferentownershiptypes,wesuggestthatownershiptypecanbeaparsimoniousandimportantvariablethatmanagersusetocognitivelyclassifyfirmsintodifferentstrategicgroups.Whileownershipitselfisano
3、bjectivevariable,wecontendthatdifferentownershiptypesleadtodifferentmanagerialoutlookandmentalityduetoanumberofmacroandmicrofoundationsgivingrisetovariousmanagerialcognitions.EmployingtheMilesandSnowtypology,wefindthatstate-ownedenterprises(SOEs)andprivately-o
4、wnedenterprises(POEs)tendtoadoptdefenderandprospectorstrategies,respectively,whilecollectively-ownedenterprises(COEs)andforeign-investedenterprises(FIEs)exhibitananalyserorientationthatfallsbetweendefendersandprospectorsonthestrategycontinuum.Threestatistical
5、testssuggestthatownershiptypescanbeusedtosuccessfullypredictstrategicgroupmembershipsinChina’semergingeconomy.INTRODUCTIONStrategicgrouphasbecomeanattractivemiddlegroundbetweenfirm-andindus-try-levelanalysesinstrategicmanagementresearch(seereviewsbyBognerandTh
6、omas,1993;McGeeandThomas,1986;ThomasandVenkatraman,1988).However,theconceptofstrategicgroup,looselydefinedasagroupoffirmswithinthesameindustrymakingsimilardecisionsinkeyareas(Porter,1980,p.129),hasattractedconsiderablecriticisms.BarneyandHoskisson(1990,p.187),i
7、naperhapsmoststronglywordedcritique,challengedresearcherstoempiricallydemonstrate:(1)that‘strategicgroupsexist’;and(2)that‘firmperformancedepends,atleastpartly,onwhichgroupafirmisin’.Failuretosatisfythesetwoconditions,accordingly,mayleadtoaconclusionthatstrateg
