3、variouselectromechanicaldevicescallforabetterunderstandingofthemechanismsoffractureinpiezoelectricceramicssubjectedtocombinedmechanicalandelectricalloading.Forthesematerials,duetounexplaineddiscrepanciesbetweentheoryandexperiments,eventhebasiccriterionoffractureremainsapointofcontroversy.Aview
4、pointadoptedinthispaperistomodelpiezoelectricceramicsasaclassofmechanicallybrittleandelectricallyductilesolids.Asafirststeptowardunderstandingtheeffectsofelectricyielding,astripsaturationmodelisdevelopedforafinitecrackperpendicularorparalleltothepolingaxisofaninfinitepoledpiezoelectricceramics
5、mediumwithelectricalpolarizationreachingasaturationlimitalongalinesegmentinfrontofthecrack.ThismodelmaybeconsideredasageneralizationoftheclassicalDugdalemodelforplasticyieldingnearcracksinthinmetalsheets.Theessentialfeaturesofthestripsaturationmodelareanalyzedviaasimplifiedelectroelasticityfor
6、mulation.Twoenergyreleaseratesemergefromthisanalysis.AnapparentorglobalenergyreleaserateappearswhenevaluatingJ-integralalongacontoursurroundingboththeelectricalyieldingstripandthecracktip.Undersmallscaleyieldingconditions,thisenergyreleaserateisequaltothatofalinearpiezoelectriccrackwithoutelec
7、tricalyielding.AlocalenergyreleaserateisobtainedbyevaluatingJalonganinfinitesimalcontournearthecracktip.Thelocalenergyreleaserategivespredictionswhichseemtobeinbroadagreementwithexperimentalobservations.Itisalsointerestingthatthelocalen
