3、feasibleareinfactimpossible.Yet,para-doxically,scienceisonlypossiblebecausesomethingsareimpossible.TheincontrovertibleevidencethatNatureisgovernedbyreliable'laws'allowsustoseparatethepossiblefromtheimpossible.Onlythoseculturesforwhomthereexistedabeliefthattherewasa
4、distinctionbetweenthepossibleandtheimpossibleprovidednaturalbreedinggroundsforscientificprogress.But'impossibility'isnotonlyaboutscience.Inthepagesthatfollowweshalllookatsomeofthewaysinwhichtheimpossibleinart,literature,politics,theology,andlogichasstimulatedthehum
5、anmindtotakeunexpectedsteps:revealinghowtheconceptoftheimpossibleshedsnewlightonthenatureandcontentoftheactual.Theideaoftheimpossibleringsalarmbellsinthemindsofmany.Tosome,anysuggestionthattheremightbelimitstothescopeofhumanunderstandingoftheUniverseortoscientificp
