3、eofdetectingatrueeffect,butitislesswellappreciatedthatlowpoweralsoreducesthelikelihoodthatastatisticallysignificantresultreflectsatrueeffect.Here,weshowthattheaveragestatisticalpowerofstudiesintheneurosciencesisverylow.Theconsequencesofthisincludeoverestima

4、tesofeffectsizeandlowreproducibilityofresults.Therearealsoethicaldimensionstothisproblem,asunreliableresearchisinefficientandwasteful.Improvingreproducibilityinneuroscienceisakeypriorityandrequiresattentiontowell-establishedbutoftenignoredmethodologicalprin

5、ciples.Ithasbeenclaimedanddemonstratedthatmany(andlowsamplesizeofstudies,smalleffectsorboth)nega-possiblymost)oftheconclusionsdrawnfrombiomedi-tivelyaffectsthelikelihoodthatanominallystatisticallycalresearchareprobablyfalse1.Acentralcauseforthissignificantf

6、indingactuallyreflectsatrueeffect.Wedis-importantproblemisthatresearchersmustpublishincusstheproblemsthatarisewhenlow-poweredresearchordertosucceed,andpublishingisahighlycompetitivedesignsarepervasive.Ingeneral,theseproblemscanbeenterprise,withcertainkindso
