3、sciplines—history,philosophy,sociology,psychology,etc.—inthesamewaythatitquestionstheideologiesofpresentsocialinstitutions.If,asJohnStuartMillsuggested,wetendtoacceptwhateverisasnatural,thisisjustastrueintherealmofacademicinvestigationasitisinoursocialarrangements.Intheformer,
4、too,"natural"assumptionsmustbequestionedandthemythicbasisofmuchso-calledfactbroughttolight.Anditisherethattheverypositionofwomanasanacknowledgedoutsider,themaverick"she"insteadofthepresumablyneutral"one"—inrealitythewhite-male-position-accepted-as-natural,orthehidden"he"asthes
5、ubjectofallscholarlypredicates—isadecidedadvantage,ratherthanmerelyahindranceorasubjectivedistortion.Inthefieldofarthistory,thewhiteWesternmaleviewpoint,unconsciouslyacceptedastheviewpointofthearthistorian,may—anddoes—provetobeinadequatenotmerelyonmoralandethicalgrounds,orbeca
6、useitiselitist,butonpurelyintellectualones.Inrevealingthefailureofmuchacademicarthistory,andagreatdealofhistoryingeneral,fortakeaccountoftheunacknowledgedvaluesystem,theverypresenceofanintrudingsubjectinhistoricalinvestigation,thefeministcritiqueatthesametimelaysbareitsconcept
