2、alpathogens,theTypeIIIsecretionsystem(TTSS)thatdirectlytranslocateseffectorproteinsintotheeukaryotichostcellsisessentialforthedevelopmentofdisease.Inallspeciesstudied,thetranscriptionoftheTTSSandmostofitseffectorsubstratesistightlyregulatedbyasuccessionofconsecutivelyactivated
3、regulators.However,thewholegeneticprogrammedrivenbytheseregulatorycascadesisstillunknown,especiallyinbacterialplantpathogens.Here,wehavecharacterisedtheprogrammetriggeredbyHrpG,ahost-responsiveregulatoroftheTTSSactivationcascadeintheplantpathogenRalstoniasolanacearum.Weshowthr
4、oughgenome-wideexpressionanalysisthat,inadditiontotheTTSS,HrpGcontrolstheexpressionofapreviouslyundescribedTTSS-independentpathwaythatincludesanumberofothervirulencedeterminantsandgeneslikelyinvolvedinadaptationtolifeinthehost.Functionalstudiesrevealedthatthissecondpathwayco-o
5、rdinatesthebacterialproductionofplantcellwall-degradingenzymes,exopolysaccharide,andthephytohormonesethyleneandauxin.Weprovideexperimentalevidencethattheseactivitiescontributetopathogenicity.WealsoshowthattheethyleneproducedbyR.solanacearumisabletomodulatetheexpressionofhostge
6、nesandcanthereforeinterferewiththesignallingofplantdefenceresponses.Theseresultsprovideanew,integratedviewofplantbacterialpathogenicity,whereacommonregulatoractivatessynchronouslyuponinfectiontheTTSS,othervirulencedeterminantsandanumberofadaptivefunctions,whichactco-operativel
