3、abulaansatatablet,wherethedateoftheDeclarationofIndependenceJULYIVMDCCLXXVI[7]isinscribed,inherleftarm.StandingonLibertyIslandinNewYorkHarbor,itwelcomesvisitors,immigrants,andreturningAmericanstravelingbyship.[8]FrédéricAugusteBartholdisculptedthestat
4、ue[9]andobtainedaU.S.patentforitsstructure.[10]MauriceKoechlin—chiefengineerofGustaveEiffel'sengineeringcompanyanddesigneroftheEiffelTower—engineeredtheinternalstructure.ThepedestalwasdesignedbyarchitectRichardMorrisHunt.EugèneViollet-le-Ducwasrespons
5、ibleforthechoiceofcopperinthestatue'sconstructionandadoptionoftherepoussétechnique,whereamalleablemetalishammeredonthereverseside.[11]Thestatueismadeofasheathingofpurecopper,hungonaframeworkofsteel(originallypuddlediron)withtheexceptionoftheflameofthe
6、torch,whichiscoatedingoldleaf(originallymadeofcopperandlateralteredtoholdglasspanes).Itstandsatoparectangularstoneworkpedestalwithafoundationintheshapeofanirregulareleven-pointedstar.Thestatueis151 ft(46 m)tall,butwiththepedestalandfoundation,itis305
7、ft(93 m)tall.Worldwide,theStatueofLibertyisoneofthemostrecognizableiconsoftheUnitedStates.[12]andwas,from1886untiltheJetAge,oftenoneofthefirstglimpsesoftheUnitedStatesformillionsofimmigrantsafteroceanvoyagesfromEurope.ThestatueisthecentralpartofStatue
