2、tofreethrowlitter,dealingwithdifficultdegradation,resultinginsevereurbanenvironmentpollution.Plastichhasadvantagesoflightweight,waterproof,anti-corrosionSincethedevelopmentofplasticearlierthiscentury,ithasbecomeapopularmaterialusedinawidevarietyofways.Todayplasticis
3、usedtomake,orwraparound,manyoftheitemswebuyoruse.Theproblemcomeswhenwenolongerwanttheseitemsandhowwedisposeofthem,particularlythethrowawayplasticmaterialusedinwrappingorpackaging.Plasticsareusedbecausetheyareeasyandcheaptomakeandtheycanlastalongtime.Unfortunatelythe
4、sesameusefulqualitiescanmakeplasticahugepollutionproblem.Thecheapnessmeansplasticgetsdiscardedeasilyanditslonglifemeansitsurvivesintheenvironmentforlongperiodswhereitcandogreatharm.Becauseplasticdoesnotdecompose,andrequireshighenergyultra-violetlighttobreakdown,thea
5、mountofplasticwasteinouroceansissteadilyincreasing.Studiesdonelocallyshowabout3500particlesofplasticpersquarekilometreofseaoffthesouthernAfricancoast.Surveysof50SouthAfricanbeachesfromtheEasternCapetoCapeTownshowthatinfiveyearsto1989plasticpollutionhasincreasedby190
6、%.Morethan90%ofthearticlesfoundonthesebeachescontainedplastic.PlasticisnowfoundonvirtuallyallSouthAfricanbeaches,eventhemostremote,andresearchersarenowalsofindingplasticrubbishinAntarcticregions.Theplasticrubbishfoundonbeachesnearurbanareastendstooriginatefromuseonl
