2、passedsincethatobservationwasmade,duringwhichtheexplosionhastriggeredanavalanche.Nootheraspectofcontemporarylife,itseems,attractsthesameamountofattentionthesedaysfromphilosophers,socialscientistsandpsychologists.Itisnotjustthat‘identitystudies’arefastbecomingathrivingindu
3、stryintheirownright;morethanthatishappening–onemaysaythat‘identity’hasnowbecomeaprismthroughwhichothertopicalaspectsofcontemporarylifearespotted,graspedandexamined.Establishedissuesofsocialanalysisarebeingrehashedandrefurbishedtofitthediscoursenowrotatingaroundthe‘identit
4、y’axis.Forinstance,thediscussionofjusticeandequalitytendstobeconductedintermsof‘recognition’,cultureisdebatedintermsofindivid-ual,grouporcategorialdifference,creolizationandhybridity,whilethepoliticalprocessisevermoreoftentheorizedaroundtheissuesofhumanrights(thatis,theri
5、ghttoaseparateidentity)andof‘lifepolities’(thatis,identityconstruction,negotiationandassertion).Isuggestthatthespectacularriseofthe‘identitydiscourse’cantellusmoreaboutthepresent-daystateofhumansocietythanitsconceptualandanalyticalresultshavetoldusthusfar.Andso,ratherthan
6、composinganother‘careerreport’ofcontentionsandcontroversieswhichcombineintothatdiscourse,Iintendtofocusonthetracingoftheexperientialgrounds,andthroughthemthestructuralroots,ofthatremarkableshiftinintellec-tualconcernsofwhichthenewcentralityofthe‘identitydiscourse’isamosts
