4、gtwowheelsatrightanglestotrackmovementonaplane.Yearslater,whenhewassearchingforadevicetoselectobjectsonacomputerscreen,herememberedthosenotes,andtogetherwithBillEnglish,hebuiltthefirstmouse.WeusethemousenotjustbecauseDougEngelbartinventedit,butbecauseitturnedouttobethepointingdevicethatpe

6、17pointingandclickingonadisplay,outperforminglightpens,cursorkeys,joysticks,trackballs,andeverythingelsethatwastriedinearlytestswithusers.Themousewonbecauseitwastheeasiesttouse.Weunderstandthereasonsforthetriumphofthemousemuchmoreclearlyfromthestoryofde
7、velopingtheearlydesignstoldbyStuCard,2whojoinedXeroxPaloAltoResearchCenter(PARC)in1974andhasspentmuchofhistimethereperfectingscientificmethodstointegratewithcreativedesign.Hehasdevelopedaprocesstopredictthebehaviorofaproposeddesign,usingtaskanalysis,approximation,andcalculation.Hisideaist
