4、ovidebackgroundandcontextforthisspecialissueonsoilrespirationandtosynthesizethepresentationsanddiscussionsattheworkshop.Soilrespirationisthelargestcomponentofecosystemrespiration.Becauseautotrophicandheterotrophicactivitybelowgroundiscontrolledbysubstrateavailability,soilrespiration
5、isstronglylinkedtoplantmetabolism,photosynthesisandlitterfall.Thislinkdominatesbothbaseratesandshort-termfluctuationsinsoilrespirationandsuggestsmanyrolesforsoilrespirationasanindicatorofecosystemmetabolism.However,thestronglinksbetweenaboveandbelowgroundprocessescomplicateusingsoilr
6、espirationtounderstandchangesinecosystemcarbonstorage.Rootandassociatedmycorrhizalrespirationproduceroughlyhalfofsoilrespiration,withmuchoftheremainderderivedfromdecompositionofrecentlyproducedrootandleaflitter.Changesinthecarbonstoredinthesoilgenerallycontributelittletosoilrespirat
7、ion,butthesechanges,togetherwithshiftsinplantcarbonallocation,determineecosystemcarbonstoragebelowgroundanditsexchangewiththeatmosphere.Identifyingthesmallsignalfromchangesinlarge,slowcarbonpoolsinfluxdominatedbydecompositionofrecentmaterialandautotrophicandmycorrhizalrespirationisas
