2、ospicetookrootintheUnitedStates,volunteersandprofessionalscontinuedtoholdtheirworkasasacredtrust.Intheyearsthatfollowed,hospiceworkerswerechallengedtobeinclusiveandtoremoveculturalbarrierstoaccesstohospicecare.Forspiritualcarethismeantpracticingunconditionalregard
3、forallbeliefs,valuesandwaysofgivingmeaning.Thespiritualcarepractitioneraffirmedandfacilitatedtheauthenticspiritualtraditionsofdiverseculturesregardlessoftheirdifferencesfromanydominanttraditions.Thejourneyofdyingprovokesaheightenedawarenessofaperson’smortality,per
4、sonalrelationshipsandcompellingspiritualissues.Dyingisaprofoundriteofpassage,sometimesmysteriousandoftenfilledwithchanges,suffering,distressandrefiningrealizationsforallinvolved.Concernedhospiceprofessionals,volunteersandfamilycaregiversaresojournerswithpatientsin
5、thesearchformeaning,comfort,strengthandhope.Practicedwithreverenceandcompassion,inrelationshipsoftrustandmutuality,hospicecareremainsalwaysessentiallysacredandspiritualinnature.Hospicebringstotheend-of-lifejourneyaholisticphilosophyandpracticeintendedtohelppatient
6、sandfamiliesaccomplishwithdignitytheoutcomesofself-determinedlifeclosure,safeandcomfortabledyingandeffectivegrieving.Hospiceattendstothespiritualdimensionsoftheend-of-lifejourneyinfacilitatingtheseoutcomes.Specifically,thesedimensionsinvolvetheuniversallongingform
