3、China""sGIScircles.1・ProgressPaceofGISResearchesofGISinChinacandatebacktotheearly1980.Atthattime,aremotesensingapplicationprojectwasbeingcarriedoninSouthwestChinaandusingGISmethodintegratedwithremotesensingdatatosolvetheareameasurementautomaticallywasini
4、tiated.AfterthefirstsuccessfultestofGIS,aproposaltostartGISresearchwasproposedintheChineseAcademyofSciences(CAS).SincethenagreatsuccesshasbeenachievedbothinresearchandapplicationofGISinChina.Whileitshistoryorprogresspacecanbedividedintofourperiods.From19
5、81・19X5,itistheinitialperiodofGISinChina.Duringthisperiod,GISwasmainlykeepinresearchandexperimentalstage,anumberofscientistsinCASandsomehighlearninginstitutesstartedtofollowthetracksofGISdevelopmentinworld.WiththesupportoftheStateScienceandTechnologyComm
6、ission(SSTC)andCAS,anumberofresearchprojectswereinitiatedandconducted,leadingtobuildupsometypicalcaseinformationsystems.Inthisperiodfivesystematicalandexperimentalresearcheshadbeenconducted・Thosearegeo-datacapturemethods,regionalinformationsystemmodeling
7、,nationalbasicgeographicdatabasesbuilding,developmentofgeo-analysissoftwareandnationalgeographicdatastandardsandspecifications.WhilethemostinfluentialoneofthoseresearcheswastheformulationofadraftGIStechnologyspecification,inwhichover50scientistsandspecia
