1、AthabascaUniversityLibrary:ServicesofaGlobalProportionAthabascaUniversity(AU)isCanada’sOpenUniversity,specializingintheprovisionofdistanceeducationcoursesatthepost-secondarylevel.TheadmissionrequirementforundergraduatestudentsisthatapplicantstotheUniversitybe1yearsofage.Studentsmaytakecoursesle

2、adingtoanumberofcertificatesanddegrees.AUoffers1universitycertificateprograms,universitydiplomaprograms,1undergraduatedegreeprograms,andgraduateprograms.Since199theUniversityhaswitnesseddramaticgrowth.Courseenrolmentsoverthepast-yearshaveincreasedbymorethan0%.Undergraduateprogramregistrationsha

3、veincreasedbymorethan1%;graduate-levelregistrationshaveincreasedbymorethan89%.Accessibilitytocourses,theabilitytoregisterincoursesyear-round,andfewerbarriertostudyingataconventionaluniversityarethemainreasonscitedbystudentsforstudyingatAthabascaUniversity.SurveysofAthabascaUniversitystudentsrev

4、ealthatthevastmajorityofstudentswouldrecommendAUtoafriendorcolleague.Approximatelyone-halfofthestudentbodyiscomprisedofvisitingstudents–studentswhotakeanAUcoursewiththeintentoftransferringthecreditstoanotheruniversity.Reasonsfortransferringcreditsprimarilyarethatcoursesarenotalwaysofferedatthes

5、tudent’shomeinstitution,theremaybetimetablingdifficultiesatthestudent’shomeinstitution,orthatstudentschoosetotakeanindependentstudycourseinadditiontothecourseloadatthehomeinstitution,andwithouttheapparentrestrictionssurroundingattendanceinaclassroom.ThenumberofstudentswhoenrollinacourseatAUtotr

6、ansferthecreditstothEirhomeinstitutionisalsoincreasingatasteadyrate.ThenumberofAUgraduatesisincreasingyearbyyear–thenumberofcredentialsawardedin199was8%higherthenthenumberofcredentialsawardedin1998.Thegrowthrateincourseregistrationsisnowatanunprecedentedlevel,andislargelyattributedtothequalityo
