4、gmuchmorephysical,concreteandfamiliartothelistener.Manylinguistssaythatlanguageisfundamentallymetaphoricalinnature.Theyareright,buttheyhaven’tgonefarenough.Thereasonthatlanguageismetaphoricalisbecausethewaywethinkismetaphorical.Ashumans,weconstantlyencounternewt
5、hingsandexperiencesintheworldaroundusanditisinournaturetotrytointerpretandunderstandthem.Anaturalstartingpointincomprehendingwhatwedonotunderstandistomakeuseofwhatwealreadyknow.Sowealwaystrytointerpretthenewphenomenaintermsofthefamiliar.Thisiswhatwemeanbysayingt
6、hathumanthoughtismetaphorical.Sincelanguageisatoolofthought,whenweuseourknowledgetoexplainnewphenomenaitisnaturalforustoborrowtermsfromtheexistinglanguageandapplythemtothenewthingsorsituations.Asaresult,languageisalsometaphorical.Wordsgenerallyhaveabasicmeaning,
7、whichoftenreferstothephysicalworld.Throughtheprocessofmetaphor,webuildonthisimagetodescribethingsthatarenotsoeasytoseeorunderstand.Thetwousesofthewordclearinthefollowingsentenceillustratethispoint:Theskyisclear.Theideaisclear.Theuseofclear,inthefirstsentencerest
