2、usefultoolforapproximateanalysisoftallstructuresincludingmoment-resistingframesandshearwall-framesystems.Incontinuummodel,discretebuildingsaresimplifiedsuchthattheiroverallbehaviorisdescribedthroughthecontributionsofflexuralandshearstiffnessesatthestorylevels.
3、Therefore,accuratedeterminationoftheselateralstiffnesscomponentsconstitutesoneofthemajorissuesinestablishingreliablecontinuummodelseveniftheproposedsolutionisanapproximationtoactualstructuralbehavior.Thisstudyfirstexaminesthepreviousliteratureonthecalculationo
4、flateralstiffnesscomponents(i.e.flexuralandshearstiffnesses)throughcomparisonswithexactresultsobtainedfromdiscretemodels.Anewmethodologyforadaptingtheheightwisevariationoflateralstiffnesstocontinuummodelispresentedbasedonthesecomparisons.Theproposedmethodology
5、isthenextendedforestimatingthenonlinearglobalcapacityofmomentresistingframes.Theverificationsthatcomparethenonlinearbehaviorofrealsystemswiththoseestimatedfromtheproposedproceduresuggestitseffectiveusefortheperformanceassessmentoflargebuildingstocksthatexhibit
6、similarstructuralfeatures.Thisconclusionisfurtherjustifiedbycomparingnonlinearresponsehistoryanalysesofsingle-degree-of-freedom(sdof)systemsthatareobtainedfromtheglobalcapacitycurvesofactualsystemsandtheirapproximationscomputedbytheproposedprocedure.KeywordsAp
