2、edge),whichfailedtoreceivedueattentioninthepast.Thepresentstudy,basedonQian(1999)’sframeworkofvocabularyknowledge,attemptstoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenbreadthanddepthofvocabularyknowledgeandreadingcomprehensioninESLforjuniorhighschoolstudents.Inthestudy,72s
3、econd-yearjuniorhighschoolstudentsareconsideredasparticipantsofthestudy.Theywererequiredtodotwoteststomeasuretheirvocabularysizeanddepthofvocabularyknowledgerespectively.Theirscoresofreadingcomprehensioninthepastweekwerealsodocumentedfortherepresentationoftheirre
4、adingproficiency.Withinoneweek’sdatacollection,therawdatawereanalyzedwithPearsoncorrelationandmultipleregressionasdominantstatisticaltechniques.Afterthat,theanalyseswereconductedwithSPSS13.0withfurtherdiscussionmadeandconclusiondrawn.Theresultofthestudyshowedthat
5、thecorrelationamongthescoresofthethreetestswerehighlyandpositivelyassociatedandespeciallyscoresondepthofvocabularyknowledgemadeanotablecontributiontothepredictionofreadingcomprehension.Basedontheempiricalevidence,conclusioncouldbedrawnthatreadingproficiencyisaffe
6、ctedmorebydepthofvocabularyknowledgethanbyvocabularysizeandthetwodimensionsofvocabularyknowledgearestronglyassociated.Thisindicatesthatvocabularyacquisitionismorethanmerememorizationofaword’sformandmeaning,butrather,itisacomplexprocessofcomprehendingallaspectsofv
