3、ofAmericaanditsliterature.(JustliketheinfluenceofConfuciandoctrineupontheideologyofChinesepeople)PuritanismisthepracticesandbeliefsofthePuritans.ThePuritanswereoriginallymembersofadivisionoftheProtestantChurch,whocameintoexistenceinthereignsofQueenEl
4、izabethandKingJamesⅠ.ThefirstsettlerswhobecamethefoundingfathersoftheAmericannationwerequiteafewofthemPuritans.TheycametoAmericaoutofvariousreasons,butitshouldberememberedthattheywereagroupofserious,religiouspeople,advocatinghighlyreligiousandmoralpr
5、inciples.Astheworditselfhints,Puritanswantedtopurifytheirreligiousbeliefsandpractices.TheyfeltthatthechurchofEnglandwastooclosetotheChurchofRomeindoctrineformofworship,andorganizationofauthority.TheAmericanPuritansbackinEngland,wereidealists,believin
6、gthatthechurchshouldberestoredtocomplete“purity”.Theyacceptedthedoctrineofpredestination,originalsinandtotaldepravity,andlimitedatonement(orthesalvationofselectedfew)throughaspecialinfusionofgracefromGod.Butinthegrimstruggleforsurvivalthatfollowedimm
7、ediatelyaftertheirarrivalinAmerica,theybecamemoreandmorepractical,theybecamemoreandmorepreoccupiedwithbusinessandprofits,asindeedtheyhadtobe.Puritans’liveswereextremelydisciplinedandhard.Theydroveoutoftheirsettlementsallthoseopinionsthatseemeddangero
