3、ularcase.Inanycase,anotionofdesertiscrucialtobothjusticeandfairness.TheNortonsandEllisonsofthisworld,forexample,areaskingforwhattheythinktheydeservewhentheyaredemandingthattheybetreatedwithjusticeandfairness.Whenpeopledifferoverwhattheybelieveshouldbegiven,orwhendecisionshaveto
4、bemadeabouthowbenefitsandburdensshouldbedistributedamongagroupofpeople,questionsofjusticeorfairnessinevitablyarise.Infact,mostethiciststodayholdtheviewthattherewouldbenopointoftalkingaboutjusticeorfairnessifitwerenotfortheconflictsofinterestthatarecreatedwhengoodsandservicesare
5、scarceandpeopledifferoverwhoshouldgetwhat.Whensuchconflictsariseinoursociety,weneedprinciplesofjusticethatwecanallacceptasreasonableandfairstandardsfordeterminingwhatpeopledeserve.Butsayingthatjusticeisgivingeachpersonwhatheorshedeservesdoesnottakeusveryfar.Howdowedeterminewhat
6、peopledeserve?Whatcriteriaandwhatprinciplesshouldweusetodeterminewhatisduetothisorthatperson?PrinciplesofJusticeThemostfundamentalprincipleofjustice—onethathasbeenwidelyacceptedsinceitwasfirstdefinedbyAristotlemorethantwothousandyearsago—istheprinciplethat"equalsshouldbetreated
