6、 Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of (16941773), English writer and statesman, best known for his witty and worldly Letters to His Son and Letters to His Godson. Chesterfield was born on September 22, 1694, in London, and educated at the University of Cambridge. He was elected to the
7、 House of Commons in 1715. In 1726, after succeeding to the earldom of Chesterfield, he entered the House of Lords. A supporter of Sir Robert Walpole, Chesterfield served as ambassador to the Dutch Republic (172832) and also as lord high steward (173033) but was dismissed because he
