4、nomousplatforms,andonvesselsofopportunity,becauseoftheirhigh-frequencymeasurements,lowpowerconsumption,andthenumerousestablishedrelationshipsbetweenopticalmeasurementsandbiogeochemicalvariables.However,theissuesofbio-foulingandinstrumentstabilityovertimeremaincomplicatin
5、gfactorswhenopticalinstrumentsareusedoverperiodslongerthanseveraldays.Here,amethodforobtainingcalibration-independentmeasurementsofspectralparticleabsorptionandattenuationispresented.Flowthroughopticalinstrumentationisroutinelydivertedthroughalargesurfacearea0.2mmcartrid
6、gefilter,allowingcalculationofparticleopticalpropertiesbydifferenceoftemporally-adjacentfilteredandwholewatersamples.Thisapproachyieldsmeasurementsthatareindependentofdriftininstrumentcalibration.Themethodhasadvantagesnotonlyforcoastalmooreddeployments,butalsoforapplicat
7、ionsinopticallyclearwaterswhereuncertaintiesininstrumentcalibrationcanbeasignificantpartofthesignalmeasured.ThedifferencingtechniqueisdemonstratedusingWETLabs(Philomath,OR)ac-9andac-smulti-andhyper-spectralabsorptionandattenuationmeters.Fortheac-ssensor,acorrectionscheme
