1、OnFeaturesofEnglishEuphemisms论英语委婉语的特点12Ⅰ.IntroductionA.Languageisasystemofcharacterswhichcameintobeingfrommen’scommonlabor,beingdevelopedandenrichedwiththedevelopmentofmen.Withthedevelopmentofoursociety,Afairnumberofwordsarelabeledfrivolous、vulgaroratleastinconsidera
2、te,andsomekindsoflanguagesareforbidden,asdifferentreligions、superstitiousbelieves、socialcustomsandotherreasons.Meanwhile,thereweresomeotherlanguageswhichareusedtotakeplace.Incommunication,forbettermaintainingsocialrelationshipandexchangingideas,peoplehavetoresorttoane
3、wdifferentkindoflanguage,whichcanmakedistastefulideasseemacceptableorevendesirable.(张曲,2007:1)Thistypeoflanguageisdefinedas“euphemism”inlinguistics.EuphemismhasbeenalwaysplayedanimportantpartinEnglishandespeciallyitischieflythekeypointformanindailycommunication.AsHugh
4、RawsonmentionedinhisworkADictionaryofEuphemismsandOtherDoubletalk,“Feelingitlikeitisnot(Time,1978:164)euphemismaboundsinourlife.Euphemismsarepowerfullinguisticdeviceswhichareembeddedsodeeplyinourlanguagethatfewofus,eventhoseonbeingplainspoken,evergetthroughadaywithout
5、usingthem.”(Rawson,1981:245)B.TherehasbeenagreatdealofresearchesaboutEnglisheuphemismbecauseofitsimportanceandprominence.Intheearly80’sof16C,GeorgeBluntcreatedtheword“euphemism”firstly,(吴成花,2007:1)whichwasdefinedas“apolitewordorexpressionthatyouuseinsteadofamoredirect
6、onetoavoidshockingorupsettingsomeone.”.(LongmanAdvancedAmericanDictionary[z],2003:485)Afterthat,lotsofscholars,forexample,HughRawson,JudithS.Neaman,Silver,R.W.Holderandsoon,havemadeagreatcontributionstotheresearchesabouteuphemisms.Inthisessay,I’llgiveananalysisanddisc
