2、fatherwasanalcoholicandthefamilywasalwaysshortofmoney.Atschool,ArthurdevelopedastronginterestinthebookswrittenbysirWalterScottandEdgarAllanPoe.ConanDoylestudiedatEdinburghUniversityandhelpedtofundhiscoursebyworkingasasurgeononHope,a400tonwhaleronasevenmonthvoyagetotheArctic.Thefol
3、lowingyearheworkedonMayumba,apassengershipboundforWestAfrica.OnthisvoyageConanDoylenearlydiedoftyphoid.Onhisreturn,ConanDoylesetupasadoctorinSouthsea,asuburbofPorthmouth.Withveryfewpatients,ConanDoyleattemptedtomakemoneybywritingdetectivestories.Hismaincharacter,SherlockHolmes,was
4、basedonDr.JosephBell,asurgeonandcriminalpsychologist,wholecturedatEdinburghInfirmary.In1891ConanDoylepublishedsixSherlockHolmesstoriesintheStrandMagazine.Thefollowingyearhewaspaid£1,000forawholeseriesonSherlockHolmes.ConanDoylereallywantedtowritehistoricalnovelslikehishero,SirWalt
5、erScott,andin1893decidedtokilloffSherlockHolmesinthestory,TheFinalProblem.However,aftercomingunderconsiderablepressurefromhisfans,hereturnedtowritehisbestknowndetectivestory,TheHoundoftheBaskervilles(1902).ConanDoyleservedasadoctorintheBoerWar(1899-1902)andwroteTheWarinSouthAfrica
6、(1902),whereheattemptedtojustifyBritain'sactionsduringthewar.On2ndSeptember,1914,soonafterthestartoftheFirstWorldWar,theLiberalpolitician,CharlesMasterman,theheadoftheWarPropaganda,organisedasecretmeetingofBritain'sleadingwriters.todiscusswaysofbestpromotingBritain'sinterestsdurin
