2、nstructionsetcomputer)machines.Untilrecently,developerswantingtobuildversionsoftheirapplicationformorethanoneplatformhadfewchoices:·Maintainseparatecodebasesforeachplatform,writtentotheplatform'snativeapplicationprogramminginterface(API).·Writetoa"virtualAPI"suchasthoseprovided
3、bycross-platformtoolsets.·Buildtheirownmultiple-platformlayerandsupportit.Today,however,anewchoiceexists.DeveloperscanusetheirexistingcodewrittentotheWindowsAPIand,usingtoolsavailablefromMicrosoftandthirdparties,recompileforalloftheplatformslistedabove.Thispaperlooksatthemethod
4、sandsomeoftheissuesinvolvedindoingso.Currentlythemostlucrativemarketforgraphicaluserinterface(GUI)applications,afterMicrosoftWindows,istheAppleMacintosh.However,vastdifferencesseparatethesewhollydifferentoperatingsystems,requiringdeveloperstolearnnewAPIs,programmingparadigms,an
5、dtools.Generally,MacintoshdevelopmentrequiresaseparatecodebasefromtheWindowssources,increasingthecomplexityofmaintenanceandenhancement.BecauseportingcodefromWindowstotheMacintoshcanbethemostdifficultportingcase,thispaperconcentratesinthisarea.Ingeneral,ifyourcodebaseissufficien
