2、IX,andRISC(reducedinstructionsetcomputer)machines.Untilrecently,developerswantingtobuildversionsoftheirapplicationformorethanoneplatformhadfewchoices:·Maintainseparatecodebasesforeachplatform,writtentotheplatform'snativeapplicationprogramminginterface(API).·W
3、ritetoa"virtualAPI"suchasthoseprovidedbycross-platformtoolsets.·Buildtheirownmultiple-platformlayerandsupportit.Today,however,anewchoiceexists.DeveloperscanusetheirexistingcodewrittentotheWindowsAPIand,usingtoolsavailablefromMicrosoftandthirdparties,recompile
4、foralloftheplatformslistedabove.Thispaperlooksatthemethodsandsomeoftheissuesinvolvedindoingso.Currentlythemostlucrativemarketforgraphicaluserinterface(GUI)applications,afterMicrosoftWindows,istheAppleMacintosh.However,vastdifferencesseparatethesewhollydiffere
5、ntoperatingsystems,requiringdeveloperstolearnnewAPIs,programmingparadigms,andtools.Generally,MacintoshdevelopmentrequiresaseparatecodebasefromtheWindowssources,increasingthecomplexityofmaintenanceandenhancement.BecauseportingcodefromWindowstotheMacintoshcanbe
6、themostdifficultportingcase,thispaperconcentratesinthisarea.Ingeneral,ifyourcodebaseissufficientlyportabletoenablestraightforwardrecompilingfortheMacintosh(excludinganyplatform-specific,or"edge"code,youmayelecttoinclude),you'llfindthatitwillcomeuponotherplatf
