3、aritself-nameless,unreasoning,unjustifiedterror,whichparalyzesneededeffortstoconvertretreatintoadvance.Ineverydarkhourofournationallife,aleadershipoffranknessandvigorhasmetwiththatunderstandingandsupportofthepeoplethemselves,whichisessentialtovictory.AndIamconvincedthatyouwillag
4、aingivethatsupporttoleadershipinthesecriticaldays.Insuchaspiritonmypartandonyours,wefaceourcommondifficulties.Theyconcern,thankGod,onlymaterialthings.Valueshaveshrunkentofantasticlevels;taxeshaverisen,ourabilitytopayhasfallen;governmentofallkindsisfacedbyseriouscurtailmentofinco
5、me;themeansofexchangearefrozeninthecurrentsoftrade;thewitheredleavesofindustrialenterpriselieoneveryside;farmersfindnomarketsfortheirproduce,andthesavingsofmanyyearsandthousandsoffamiliesaregone.Moreimportant,ahostofunemployedcitizensfacethegrimproblemofexistence,andanequalandgr
6、eatnumbertoilwithlittlereturn.Onlyafoolishoptimistcandenythedarkrealitiesofthemoment.Andyet,ourdistresscomesfromnofailureofsubstance,wearestrickenbynoplagueoflocusts.Comparedwiththeperilswhichourforefathersconquered,becausetheybelievedandwerenotafraid,wehavesomuchtobethankfulfor
