2、tions.However,thestrict-couplingbetweenapplicationsandRFIDequipmentmustberelaxedtoscaleuptheirusability.Inordertodoso,RFIDmiddlewaresareemployed,allowingtheapplicationstobecomeindependentoftheunderlyingcomplexities.Inthispaper,wepresentinterplayofallthatcontemporaryRFIDmiddlewaresprovide,and

3、actualexpectationsfromthem,intermsofdesirable“features”and“aspects”.Whiletheaspectsaremorebusinessspecific,featuresareimplementationspecific.WeextractimplementedfeaturesfromthestudyofRFIDmiddlewares,whichinturn,realizedesignaspects.Webreakdownthesefeaturesintorespectivefunctionssetinorderto,

4、(a)unravelfunctionaloverlapbetweenthesefeaturesbothhorizontallyandvertically,and(b)observethateachofthesefunctionsimplementspartofsystemlevelbusinessdesignaspects.Weconcludethatanappreciationofoverlapbothatthefunctional-levelandatthedesignaspects-levelallowssimpleryetcomprehensiveimplementat

5、ionsofRFIDmiddlewares.WeproposeSOA-basedstrategythathelpstoconsolidaterepresentativedesignaspectsofawell-federatedRFIDmiddleware.Wepresentmiddlewareasaservice(MaaS)architecture,whichencapsulatesunderlyingcomplexitiesofRFIDsystemsfromtheenterpriseapplicationwhiletaming2themintwo-dimensions,si

6、multaneously.MaaSachieveshorizontaltamingthroughexposedservices,whileverticaltamingisachievedthroughtheirneed-basedinvocation.WehavesuccessfullyshownthroughprototypeimplementationthatMaaSallowsmodularinvocationofservicesagreedthroughcontract,realizingSOA-basedRFIDparagonandachieveskeydesigna
