2、heimperialpalaceoftheMingandQingdynasties.Itisnearly600yearsold,withconstructionstartedin1406andcompletedin1420.TheprinciplesofFengShui,theancientChinesesystemofgeomancy,governedthewholeprocess.Therectangularpalacecoversanareaofsome720,000sq.km--961minlengthand760minwidth.
3、Ithasatotalof9999.5roomspaces(anareaenclosedbyfourpoles).In1924,theimperialfamilyoftheQingDynasty(1644-1840)wasremovedfromtheForbiddenCity,andin1925thePalaceMuseumwasestablishedhere.EmperorsoftheMingandQingdynastiesfrom1420to1911heldcourtandlivedwithinthewallsoftheForbidde
4、nCity.Aftertherepublicanrevolution,thispalaceasawholewouldhavebeensequesteredbytheNationalistgovernmentwereitnotforthe"ArticlesofFavorableTreatmentoftheQingHouse"whichallowedPuyitoliveonintheInnerCourtafterhisabdication.Meanwhile,alltheimperialtreasuresfrompalacesinRehe(to
5、day'sChengde)andMukden(today'sShenyang)weremovedtotheForbiddenCityforpublicdisplayinanantiquitiesmuseumestablishedattheOuterCourtin1914.WhileconfinedtotheInnerCourt,Puyicontinuouslyusedsuchvestigesofinfluenceasstillremainedtoplothisownrestoration.Healsosystematicallystoleo
6、rpawnedahugenumberofculturalrelicsunderthepretextofgrantingthemasrewardstohiscourtiersandminionsortakingthemoutforrepair.In1924,duringacouplaunchedbythewarlordFengYuxiang,PuyiwasexpelledfromtheForbiddenCityandthemanagementofthepalacefelltothechargeofacommitteesetuptodealwi
7、ththeconcernsofthedeposedimperialfamily.Thecommitteebeganasortingandcountingoftheimperialtreasures.Afterayearofintensepreparations,itsmembersarrangedagrandceremonyonOctober10,1925infrontofthePalaceofHeavenlyPuritytomarktheinceptionofthePalaceMuseum.Newsoftheopeningflasheda
