3、,MackieandGauthier.Evolutionaryapproachestoethicsunderstandablyhaveamuchshorterhistory.Theyreceivedcriticaldiscussioninthe1890sbyThomasHuxley,wereunpopularformuchofthe20thCentury,buthaveseenaresurgenceinthelast20yearsorsowiththeriseofSociobiologyandEvolutionaryPsychology.Asiswell-known,socia
4、lcontractandevolutionaryapproachestoethicsfaceis-oughtproblemsiftheyattempttoprovideadeductivefoundationforethics.Whatevolutionhasfavored,andwhatoughttobe,maywellbedifferent,andindeedmany,includingHuxley,havethoughttheywereclearlyinconflict.Athirdtheory,economicefficiencyorsocialwealthmaximi
5、zation,isthemostrecentandleastpopularofthistrio.Itappearsitmayhavejustalonepublicsupporter,RichardPosner.Posner’sprimaryworkhasbeenineconomicsandlaw,wherehehasarguedthateconomicfactorsfromprehistorythroughthepresenthavedriventhehistoricaldevelopmentofcaselaw.Inafewplaces,notablyTheEconomicso
