2、beenusedinordertoshowthestandpointsofCygnaeusandSalomonindevelopmentofhandicrafteducationbuttheyaretheonlyones,whichhavebeenpreservedofthecorrespondencebetweenthetwogentlemen.ThelettersofUnoCygnaeus(1810-1888)havebeenhandledbyhistoriansofeducationbefore.Cygnaeushadalar
3、gecorrespondencebecauseofhiswork,travelsandinternationalrelationsbutalsowithhisformerstudentswhowereteachersallaroundthecountryandstartedthenewschoolsystem,whichhehadfounded.ThelettersbetweenthetwoNordichandicraft(‘slöjd’;‘sloyd’)developmentauthorities,UnoCygnaeus,aFin
4、n,andOttoSalomon(1849-1907),aSwede,havenotgenerallybeenknowninFinlandbythehandicrafteducationresearcherswhomostlyhavequotedthesecondaryreferencesonly.ThethoroughhistoryandanalysisofOttoSalomonwrittenbyHansThorbjörnsson(1990),alsolacksthelettersfromUnoCygnaeustoOttoSalo
5、mon.Thisisbecauseinthe1930sAukustiSalo,professorofeducationinHelsinkiUniversity,sentaresearchassistanttocollectthelettersandbringthembacktoFinlandinordertobepreservedhere;mostofthethelettersalsoweretranslatedinFinnish.Anotherresearcher,Jussila,lateroncataloguedthelette
6、rs.TheoriginallettershavebeenkeptinthearchivesofthelibraryoftheFacultyofEducationinHelsinkiUniversity,butresearched,asfarasitisknown,mostlyonlybythegeneraleducationhistorians,eg.Gladh(1968),Halila(1949),Jussila(1968;1974),Ottelin(1934)andNurmi(1988).Somehandicrafteduca
