3、,inwhichhumanfreedomistheprize.ThegoaloflibertarianactivismshouldnotbetowinIremaincommittedtothefaithofmyteenageyears:toauthentichumanfreedomasapreconditionforthehighestgood.Istandagainstconfiscatorytaxes,totalitariancollectives,andtheideologyoftheinevitabi
4、lityofthedeathofeveryindividual.Forallthesereasons,Istillcallmyself“libertarian.”ButImustconfessthatoverthelasttwodecades,Ihavechangedradicallyonthequestionofhowtoachievethesegoals.Mostimportantly,Inolongerbelievethatfreedomanddemocracyarecompatible.Bytraci
5、ngoutthedevelopmentofmythinking,Ihopetoframesomeofthechallengesfacedbyallclassicalliberalstoday.AsaStanfordundergraduatestudyingphilosophyinthelate1980s,Inaturallywasdrawntothegive-and-takeofdebateandthedesiretobringaboutfreedomthroughpoliticalmeans.Istarte
6、dastudentnewspapertochallengetheprevailingcampusorthodoxies;wescoredsomelimitedvictories,mostnotablyinundoingspeechcodesinstitutedbytheuniversity.Butinabroadersensewedidnotachieveallthatmuchforalltheeffortexpended.MuchofitfeltliketrenchwarfareontheWesternFr
7、ontinWorldWarI;therewasalotofcarnage,butwedidnotmovethecenterofthedebate.Inhindsight,wewerepreachingmainlytothechoir—evenifthishadtheimportantsidebenefitofconvincingthechoir’smemberstocontinuesingingfortherestoftheirlives.AsayounglawyerandtraderinManhattani
