3、esirePetroleumhasbeenexploringforhydrocarbonssince1997.TheNorthFalklandBasinisafailedrift,whichformedduringthebreak-upoftheancientlandmassofGondwana.PlatetectonicreconstructionsuggeststhattheentireFalklandsareapriortothebreak-upwasoriginallylocatedtotheSouth-eastofSouthAfri
4、caandmovedtoitspresentpositionduringtheopeningoftheSouthAtlanticduringtheJurassictotheCretaceous.TheNorthFalklandBasincanbefurthersubdividedintoanorthern,ormain,basininwhichTranchesAtoFarelocatedandasouthernbasinintheareaofTranchesIandL.Thesouthernbasinisundrilledandcompris
5、esanoldersuiteofrocksthanthatfoundinthemainbasintothenorth.ThisarticleconcentratesonthemainareainTranchesCandDwherethenextdrillingcampaignwilltakeplace.ExplorationHistoryThefirstphaseofexplorationwasintheearly1990'swhenSpectrumacquiredthefirstdetailed2Dseismicacrossthearea.
6、ThesedatadefinedtheoutlinesoftheN-StrendingNorthFalklandBasin,approximately180kmslongby30kmswideandformedthebasisfortheevaluationwhichledtothefirstroundoflicensingin1996.Sevenlicenceswereawardedin1997toShell,Amerada,Lasmo,InternationalPetroleumCorporation(IPC)andDesire.Thes
7、ecompaniesacquiredmore2DseismicovertheirlicencesandinadditionShellacquiredasmall3Dsurvey.Shell,Amerada,LasmoandIPCformedFOSA(FalklandsOffshoreSharingAgreement)jointlytoconductadrillingcampaignin1998.Thesemi-submersibledrillingrigtheBorgnyDolphinwascontractedanddrillingbegan
