1、Coal-ProducingTectonicEnvironmentsThisfinalchapterintheinvestigationofcoalsedimentationisconcernedwithdepositionalaspectsofthehighestorderofmagnitude,namely,theinfluenceofthecrustalsettingonpeataccumulation.Thisisabroadandcomplexfieldwhichdrawsoninformation,gatheredfrommanydi
2、fferentdisciplinesoftheearthsciences.Someofthesearecurrentlyevolvingquiterapidly,whileothersreina“moppingup”stage,insensuKuhn(1970)andWalker(1973),followingrecentscientificrevolutions.Anexampleofthelatteristhereplacementofthegeosynclinalhypothesisintheearly1970sbytheconceptof
3、platetectonics.Evenafteralifespanof20years,thisnewparadigmisstillintheprocessofbeingrefinedandfittedoutwithconceptualsubsets,asshownbythecurrentemphasisonterraneanalysis.Itisthereforenotpossibleatthisstagetomakeadefinitivestatementonthechosensubject,butmerelytooutlinetheprinc
4、ipleonwhichamoderngeotectonicclassificationofcoalfieldscanbeestablished.Eventhismodestgoalisfraughtwithdifficulty,becausethechangefromthepredominantlystaticgeosynclinalviewofglobaltectonicstoitsmodern,largelymobilisticinterpretationhascomplicatedthetectonicclassificationofsom
5、ecoalfields.Whilethetectonicstatusofmanycoalfields,e.g.thoseinforedeepsorforelandbasinshaschangedrelativelylittle,thesettingofcoalsfoundininter-andintramontanetroughs,i.e.withinorogeniccordilleras,cannotbeproperlyassessedwithoutverycarefulstudy.Accordingtothegeosynclinalconce
6、pt,practicallyalloftheseintradeeps,togetherwithfore-andbackdeeps,theirextra-orogeniccounterparts,wereregardedaspartofagroupofmolassesbasins,thedevelopmentofwhichaccompaniesorfollows“terminalgeosynclinaltecto-orrgenic”(Aubouin1965).Thisfixistandstrictlysequentialinterpretation
7、(highlightedbytheterm“epieugeosyncline”ofKay1951)hasnoplaceinmoderngeotectonicanalysis,whichviewsmostorogenicbeltsascollagesofautochthonousandallochthonousterranes,i.e.astectono-stratigraphicassemblageswithpossiblycoevalbutheterogeneousstratigraphicrecordsreflectingtheirorigi
