3、ductionofmicrobialbiofilmexopolysaccharide(EPS).Theassaywasfirstappliedtobiofilmsproducedinthepresenceoftwouniversaldisinfectants(sodiumhypochloriteandsodiumdodecylsulfate)knownoinhibitmicrobialgrowthandbiofilmformation.Theperformanceoftheassaywasthecharacterizedthroughstatis
4、ticalassessmentofthresholdconcentrationsfordisinfectionefficiencyandconsistencyrelativetovaluesreportedintheliterature.Theassaywasthenevaluatedforitsutilityinscreeningforenzymaticorchemicalinhibitorsofbiofilmformation(egglycosidases,halogenatedfuranones,andsemi-crudefraction
5、sextractedfromminimallyfouledmarineplants)anditsabilitytodistinguishbetweentrueanti-biofilmactivityandsimpledisinfection.Activitywascharacterizedas(i)noeffect,(ii)atruepositiveeffect(ieincreasedbiofilmEPS),(iii)anti-bacterialactivity(iedecreasedbiofilmEPSandanalogousdecreasein
6、planktonicgrowth),and(iv)anti-biofilmEPSactivity(iedecreasedbiofilmEPS,withoutanalogousdecreaseinplanktonicgrowth).ResultsdemonstratethattheuronicacidsassaycanaugmentexistingbiofilmcharacterizationmethodsbyprovidingaquantitativemeasureofbiofilmEPS.Keywords:uronicacid;biofilm;e
