2、provinceofacademicswhouseditasawayofsharinginformationforresearchpurposes.HoweverwiththeadventoftheWorldWideWebandthedevelopmentofuser-friendlysoftware,accesstothefacilitiesaffordedbytheInternetbecameaccessibletoawideraudiencethathad/haslittleornotechnicalexpertise.Itisth

3、eWebanditscurrentuser-friendlynaturethatmostusersequatewiththetermInternetorNet.Adirectresultofthesedevelopmentshasbeenashiftinthetypeofuserandthecultureofinformationusage.Theuser-friendlyWebhasturnedtheInternetintoaglobalresourcethatisbeingusedasamajorresourceineducation

4、alinstitutions,corporateorganisationsandthemarketplace.Wehaveanemerging‘NetGeneration’ofstudentsforwhominstantaneoustelecommunicationsandaccesstoinformationhavealwaysbeenapartoftheireverydaylives.ThispaperexplorestheconnectionsbetweenearlyuseoftheInternet,academicprotocol

5、sandtheriseofanemergingcultureofplagiarismamongstthe‘NetGeneration’.IntroductionWhentheInternetfirstappearedasamajorcommunicationsdeviceinthelateeighties(Zakon,2004),itwascloselyconnectedwithacademicinstitutionsandtheprotocolsthatexistedandstillexistinacademiatoday.Inthea

6、cademicenvironmentinformationissharedbyresearcherswhogainkudosfromtheirpeersandaddtotheirreputationbypublishing/sharingtheirresearch,thoughtsandideasinacademicjournals/publications.Sinceresearchintheacademicenvironmenthasbeentraditionallyfundedbygovernmentandnottiedtocomm

7、ercialenterprise(Barbrook,1998),theInternetasitfirstappearedbecameanotherconduitfortheresearchcommunitytodisseminateandexchangeinformationfreely.TheearlyInternetworkedonacomplexarrangementofprotocols,trustandasenseofcommunity(Coyne,2001).Intheacademicenvironmentthemostres
