2、imselfanartist,mayseekinspirationorguidanceforhisownpractice;another,beingastudentofthehistoryofcivilization,maystrivetocomprehendtheproductsofartasonemanifestationofapeople’sspirituallife;anothermaybeinterestedchieflyintracingthedevelopmentofartisticp
3、rocesses,forms,andsubjects;andsoon.Butthisbookhasbeenwrittenintheconvictionthatthegreatestofallmotivesforstudyingart,themotivewhichisandoughttobestrongestinmostpeople,isthedesiretobecomeacquaintedwithbeautifulandnoblethings,thethingsthat“soothethecares
4、andliftthethoughtsofman.”Thehistoricalmethodoftreatmenthasbeenadoptedasamatterofcourse,buttheemphasisisnotlaiduponthehistori-calaspectsofthesubject.ThechiefaimhasbeentopresentcharacteristicspecimensofthefinestGreekworkthathasbeenpreservedtous,andtosugg
5、esthowtheymaybeintelligentlyenjoyed.Fortunatetheywhocancarrytheirstudiesfarther,withthehelpoflesselementaryhandbooks,ofphotographs,ofcasts,or,bestofall,oftheoriginalmonuments.Mostoftheillustrationsinthisbookhavebeenmadefromphotographs,ofwhichallbutafew
6、belongtothecollectionofGreekphotographsownedbytheUniversityofChicago.Anumberofotherillustrationshavebeenderivedfrombooksorserialpubli-cations,asmaybeseenfromtheaccompanyinglegends.Inseveralcaseswherecutswereactuallytakenfromsecondarysources,suchasBaume
7、ister’s“DenkmalerdesklassischenAltertums,”theyhavebeencreditedtotheiroriginalsources.Afewarchi-tecturaldrawingsweremadeexpresslyforthiswork,beingadaptedfromtrustworthyauthorities,viz.:Figs.6,51,61.and64.Thereremaintwoorthreeadditionalillustra-tions,whi
