3、ifferencebetweenPureandEmpiricalKnowledgeThatallourknowledgebeginswithexperiencetherecanbenodoubt.Forhowisitpossiblethatthefacultyofcognitionshouldbeawak-enedintoexerciseotherwisethanbymeansofobjectswhichaffectoursenses,andpartlyofthemselvesproducerepresentations,partlyr
4、ouseourpowersofunderstandingintoactiv-ity,tocomparetoconnect,ortoseparatethese,andsotoconverttherawmaterialofoursen-suousimpressionsintoaknowledgeofobjects,whichiscalledexperience?Inrespectoftime,therefore,noknowledgeofoursisantecedenttoexperience,butbeginswithit.But,tho
5、ughallourknowledgebeginswithex-perience,itbynomeansfollowsthatallarisesoutofexperience.For,onthecontrary,itisqui-tepossiblethatourempiricalknowledgeisacompoundofthatwhichwereceivethroughimpressions,andthatwhichthefacultyofcog-nitionsuppliesfromitself(sensuousimpres-sions
6、givingmerelytheoccasion),anadditionwhichwecannotdistinguishfromtheoriginalelementgivenbysense,tilllongpracticehasmadeusattentiveto,andskilfulinseparatingit.Itis,therefore,aquestionwhichrequirescloseinvestigation,andnottobeansweredatfirstsight,whetherthereexistsaknowledge
7、altogetherindependentofexperience,andevenofallsensuousimpressions?Knowledgeofthiskindiscalledapriori,incontradistinctiontoempiricalknowledge,whichhasitssourcesaposteriori,thatis,inexperience.Buttheexpression,"apriori,"isnotasyetdefi-niteenoughadequatelytoindicatethewhole
