3、lveswithGermanmilitaryaircraftlongbeforetheinvasionoftheUSSRinJune1941.SomehadbeencapturedinSpainduringtheCivilWarandsentbacktotheSovietUnion,whileotherswereboughtfromtheGermansfollowingthesigningoftheinfamousnon-aggressionpactbetweenthetwocountriesi
4、nAugust1939.HavingstudiedtheLuftwaffe’sprincipalfighter,theMesserschmittBf109E,andcompareditsflightdatawiththethennewMiG-3,Yak-1andLaGG-3,boththeleadershipoftheVVS-KAandsenioraircraftdesignerscametotheconclusioninearly1941thatSovietfightershadatlasta
5、ttainedparitywiththeirwesternEuropeanequivalents.However,intheimmediateaftermathofthelaunchingofOperationBarbarossaon22June1941,itquicklybecameapparentthattheE-model’sreplacement,theBf109F,wasclearlysuperiortoallRussianfighterstheninfrontlineservice.
6、Forexample,the‘Friedrich’wasfasterthanallthreenewSovietfightersuptoanaltitudeof16,500ft–fightingrarelyoccurredathigheraltitudesontheEasternFront.TheBf109F’sresultingmasteryoftheskiesgreatlyassistedtheWehrmachtinitsadvanceintotheUSSR.Indeed,Germantroo
7、pshadprogressedsofareastbytheautumnandwinterof1942thattheSovietaviationindustryhadtoendureapainful,butnecessary,evacuationtothecountry’seasternregions.SuchamovefurtherhinderedthedevelopmentofahomegrownfighterwiththeperformancetorivaltheBf109Fatjustth
