2、rCampus,Bangalore–560037Abstract:ThespateofEarthquakesinthecountryhasheightenedthesensitivityofadministrators,engineersandevenlaypeopletorisksduetoearthquakes.ManymetropolitanandbigcitiesinIndiaaresituatedinthesevereearthquakehazardthreatinthevicinityofHimalayanregionandeveninpeninsularshield
3、.OnJanuary26,2001,oneofthemostdestructiveearthquakesevertostrikeIndiaoccurredintheKachchhregionofGujaratinwesternIndia.Theearthquakewasofmagnitude7.7(Mw)andthedamagewasspreadoveraradiusof400kilometersincludingmajorcitieslikeAhmedabad,BhavnagarandSuratatadistanceof240km,275kmand350kmrespective
4、ly.OnecannotruledoutasimilarthreattoDelhi–thecapitalfromlocalandprobablecatastrophicearthquakedueincentralHimalaya.ThereareseveralothercitieslikeMumbai,Kolkata,Dehradun,GuwahatiandmanymoresittinginthicksedimentarybasinsalongIndo-GangeticplaneandBramhaputravalley.Tomitigatetheseismichazard,iti
5、snecessarytodefineacorrectresponseintermsofboththepeakgroundaccelerationandspectralamplification.Thesefactorsarehighlydependentonthelocalsoilconditionsandonthesourcecharacterizationoftheexpectedearthquakes.ThisisthetimetolearnalessonfromBhujearthquakeandtogoforadetailedseismicgroundmotionmode
