2、larsworkingdirectlyfromthebestavailableHebrew,AramaicandGreektexts.ThefactthatparticipantsfromtheUnitedStates,GreatBritain,Canada,AustraliaandNewZealandworkedtogethergavetheprojectitsinternationalscope.Thattheywerefrommanydenominations—includingAnglican,
3、AssembliesofGod,Baptist,Brethren,ChristianReformed,ChurchofChrist,EvangelicalFree,Lutheran,Methodist,Nazarene,Presbyterian,Wesleyanandotherchurches—helpedtosafeguardthetranslationfromsectarianbias.ResponsibilityfortheNIVtextisheldbyaself-governingbody,th
4、eCommitteeonBibleTranslation,composedofbiblicalscholarsfromcolleges,universitiesandseminaries.Fromthebeginning,thetranslatorswereunitedintheircommitmenttotheauthorityandinfallibilityoftheBibleasGod’sWordinwrittenform.Theybelievedthatitcontainsthedivinean
5、swertothedeepestneedsofhumanity,thatitshedsuniquelightonourpathinadarkworld,andthatitsetsforththewaytooureternalwell-being.Inlightofthis,theCommitteeheldtocertaingoalsfortheNIV:thatitwouldbeanaccuratetranslationandonethatwouldhaveclarityandliteraryqualit
6、yandsoprovesuitableforpublicandprivatereading,teaching,preaching,memorizingandliturgicaluse.TheCommitteealsosoughttopreserveameasureofcontinuitywiththelongtraditionoftranslatingtheScripturesintoEnglish.ThereisasenseinwhichtheworkoftranslatingtheBibleisne
7、verfinallyfinished.ThisveryfacthaspromptedtheCommitteetoengageinanongoingreviewofthetextoftheNIVwiththeassistanceofmanyotherscholars.ThechiefgoalofthisreviewhasalwaysbeentobringthetextoftheNIVabreastofcontemporarybiblicalscholarshipandofshiftsinEnglishid
