1、AComputerAdventureGameAsAWorthwhileEducationalExperienceSHIRLEYGRUNDYUniversityofNewEngland,NewSouthWalesComputersaretypicallyutilizedinschoolsandclassroomsintwodistinctways.Eithertheyareemployedaspartofaprogramaimedatteachingaboutcomput-ersortheyareanintegr
2、alpartofthelearningprogramoftheclassroom.EatonandOlsondesignatethesemodesofutilizationas"computerassubjectandcomputerasaninstructionaltool"(1986,p.342).Adventuregameshavebecomeapopularformofeducationalsoftwareusedinbothofthesesituations.Fasanonotesthat"compu
3、tergamesandcurriculumforproblem-solvingareburgeoningareasineducationandseemtobepromising,[although]timeandresearchinvestmentswilltell"(1988,p.59).Thestudyreportedhereispartofthisresearchinvestment,foritfocussesuponthepotentialofanadventuregametoprovideworthw
4、hilelearningexperiences.Thisinvestigationisalsopartofawiderstudyofthelanguageusedbystu-dentsandteacherswhenacomputerispartofthelearningenvironment.Inthestudyanadventuregamewasusedasavehiclefortheexplorationofclassroomtalk.Thispaperexaminesaspectsofthegameits
5、elfaswellasteachers'andstu-dents'talkinordertoprovideabasisformakingjudgmentsabouttheeducationalworthofthelearningexperienceswhichthegamewasabletoopenupforthestudents.Thisisacasestudy,andhencenoclaimsofageneralizablenaturearemade.Rather,throughtheexamination
6、oftheworthofthisgameasalearningexperience,criteriaaredevelopedwhicharepertinenttotheevaluationofothercomputer-basedlearningexperiences.Theliteraturerelatingtocomputersineducationisvastandvaried.Ingeneral,publishedmaterialaboutcomputersineducationfallsintofou
