2、xponentialscaleparameter.Ourgoalsaretoillustratetherobust-nessorlackthereofofsomeoftheclassicalestimators.Wewillintroducemixturemodelsforcontaminationandthefinitesamplebreakdownpointtoassistusinouranalysis,andfinallyconsidersomedifferentmethodsofestimatingthestandarderror
3、ofourestimators,includingthebootstrap.Thedifferencebetweenthelocationparameterandthescaleparameterestimationproblemsisthatintheformerashiftofthedistributionispos-sible,whileinthelatterafractionalormultiplicativechangeispossible.Mathematically,locationismodeledbyaddingthes
4、ameunknownconstanttoeachobservationfromafixeddistribution,whilescaleismodeledbymultiplyingeachobservationbyanunknownpositiveconstant.Thereadershouldbewarythatthesamplemean,median,andsomeotherestimatorscommonlyusedaslocationparameterestimatorsmayalsobereasonablescaleparame
5、terestimatorsinthescalecontext,atleastwhenmultipliedbysuitableconstants.ThelocationproblemistreatedinChapter4.2.1EXAMPLESTobeginwegiveexampleswhereascaleparameterisofinterest.Inthefirstexampleanexponentialmodelmaybeappropriate,andmanycharac-teristicsofthispopulationcanbee
