4、esremainunder-examined.WeinvestigateSME5March2009purchasingpracticesintermsof(1)thedegreetowhichpurchasingisregardedasa‘strategic’activityAccepted11March2009bySMEs,(2)theuseofsupplierevaluationsystemsbySMEsand(3)thesuppliercapabilitiesemphasisedbySMEbuyers.ThroughasurveyofU

5、KSMEmanagers,wefindthatpurchasingpracticesKeywords:variedgreatlyacrossSMEs.PurchasingformalityisgenerallylowwithlimitedevidenceofpurchasingSMEbeingemployedstrategicallyandwithmanyfirmsnotundertakingformalsupplierevaluations.InPurchasingtermsofsuppliercapabilities,wefindthatSME

6、sdifferinthecapabilitiestheyprioritise,withthreeStrategicpurchasingdistinctgroupsevident.Thesegroupsarelabelled‘holistic’,‘process’and‘logistics’basedonthesupplierSupplierevaluationcapabilitiestheyemphasise.ThesethreegroupsoffirmsalsodifferedintermsoftheemphasistheyCapabilit
