3、years.Significantadvanceshavebeenmadeinallareasofpapermaking,includingrawmaterials,productiontechnology,processcontrolandendproducts.Thecomplexityoftheprocesses,thescaleofoperationandproductionspeedsleavelittleroomforerrorormalfunction.Modernpapermakingwould
4、notbepossiblewithoutapropercommandofagreatvarietyoftechnologies,inparticularadvancedprocesscontrolanddiagnosticmethods.Notonlyhasthetechnologyprogressedandnewtechnologyemerged,butourunderstandingofthefundamentalsofunitprocesses,rawmaterialsandproductproperti
5、eshasalsodeepenedconsiderably.Thevariationsintheindustry抯heterogeneousrawmaterials,andthesophisticationofpulpingandpapermakingprocessesrequireaprofoundunderstandingofthemechanismsinvolved.Paperandboardproductsarecomplexinstructureandcontainmanydifferentcompo
6、nents.Therequirementsplacedonthewaytheseproductsperformarewide,variedandoftenconflicting.Thoseinvolvedinproductdevelopmentwillcontinuetoneedaprofoundunderstandingofthechemistryandphysicsofbothrawmaterialsandproductstructures.Paperhasplayedavitalroleinthecult
7、uraldevelopmentofmankind.Itstillhasakeyroleincommunicationandisneededinmanyotherareasofoursociety.Thereisnodoubtthatitwillcontinuetohaveanimportantplaceinthefuture.Papermust,however,maintainitscompetitivenessthroughcontinuousproductdevelopmentinordertomeetth
