2、egardingscientificknowledgegenerationanditsapplicationinthedesignstudiobyinvestigatingtheeffectsofparticulardesignapproachesontheintegrationofsociobehaviouralscientificinformationbydesignstudents.Theinvestigationinvolvedthesystematicassignmentofthestudentstooneofthreetreatmentsr
3、epresentingalternativedesignapproachesandassessmentoftheeffectsofthesetreatmentsonthequalityoftheirdesignproductsintermsofknowledgeintegration.Thethreetreatmentsapproximatethemajormethodologicalapproachesthataredebatedintheliterature.Theydifferintheirassumptionsonthenatureofthed
4、esignprocess,theformofknowledge,andthetypeofinformationrepresentation.Theresultssupportthemainhypothesisthatatreatmentcorrespondingtotheintegrative/generativestrategy,inwhich'style'(aformimage,combinatorialrulesandatheoreticalframework)servesasaprimarygenerator,issuperiortoalist
5、ingofempiricalinformationgeneratedbyanexternalsource.Giventhediscussionintheliteratureonthedesignprocessandcognitionandtheresultsofthisstudy,itispossibletostatethattheapplicabilitygapisexpectedtodiminishtotheextentthattheformofknowledgeembodiedin'style'isexplicitlylinkedtothedev
