3、cialattention.In2002,however,Martel’sinternationalliteraryreputationwassealedwiththepublicationofLifeofPi,arunawaybestsellerthatwentontowintheprestigiousManBookerPrize(awardedeachyeartothebestEnglish-languagenovelwrittenbyaCommonwealthorIrishauthor)andhadsincebeentranslatedintothi
4、rtylanguages.Fox2000picturesboughtthescreenrightstoMartel’snovel,andafeaturefilmisexpectedin2008.LifeofPiissetagainstthetumultuousperiodofIndianhistoryknownastheEmergency.In1975,PrimeMinisterIndiraGandhiwasfoundguiltyofchargesrelatedtoher1971electioncampaignandwasorderedtoresign.I
5、nstead—andinresponsetoarisingtideofstrikesandproteststhatwereparalyzingthegovernment—Gandhideclaredastateofemergency,suspendingconstitutionalrightsandgivingherselfthepowertorulebydecree.TheEmergencylastedforeighteenmonthsandwasofficiallyendedinMarch1977whenGandhicalledforanewround
