2、gy,Beijing,102413,P.R.CABSTRACTAnewcompactmagneticprotonrecoil(MPR)typespectrometerhasbeendevelopedfordiagnosingfusionneutrons.Thedesignsofbeamopticsandfocalplanedetectors(FPD)oftheMPRspectrometerarepresented.ThecalibrationexperimentoftheFPD,whichisconsistedofsilic
3、onmicrostrips,hasbeenperformedontheHI-13tandemacceleratoratChinaInstituteofAtomicEnergy(CIAE).Theuncertaintyofthemeasurementdataisdiscussed.Keywords:focalplanedetector,energycalibration,magneticprotonrecoilspectrometer,beamoptics1.INTRODUCTIONThemagneticprotonrecoi
4、l(MPR)spectrometerhasbeenutilizedinthemeasurementofthethermonuclearneutronsfromafusionreactor[1,2].Theinstrumentisbasedontheprinciplethatneutronscanbeconvertedtoprotonsthroughelasticscatteringinaproton-richconversionfoilandthefactthatprotons’travelinginamagneticfie
5、ldcanbeseparatedinspaceduetotheirmomentumdifference.Whenprotonsenterthemagneticspectrometer,momentumselectiontakesplaceandtheirenergiescanbededucedbytheirpositionsonafocalplanedetectorarrayattheexitofthespectrometer.Theprotonsareonlyrecoiledfromtheelasticscattering
6、processandthereispracticallynootherextraneousproductionofprotons.Furthermore,onlyforwardrecoiledprotonsareusedsotheenergydownshiftissmall.Thishelpsobtaininggoodenergyresolutionandlowbackgroundinterference.Thisspatialdistributioncanberelatedbacktoneutronenergyatthef
7、oil.TheMPRspectrometerwasinstalledattheJointEuropeanTorus(JET)in1996andhasprovideddiagnosticsofmainlyforhighneutronyieldratesfrombothdeuterium-deuteriumanddeuterium-tritiumplasmassinceFebruary1997.TheMPRweightsabout90tonsincludingthesurroundingconcreteshieldingthat
8、isneededforreducingbackgroundinterferenceinthehostileenvironmentoftheTorushall.AnovelspectrometerforthemeasurementofneutronshasbeendesignedforOME
