4、n,Indiana,andthendirectlytoSaudiArabia.IhadbeenintheGuardfor10yearsandneverdreamedthatwewouldbeactivatedforawar,eventhoughIknewitwaswhatwetrainedfor.Iwenttomyfatherandgavehimthenews.Icouldsensehewasuneasyaboutmegoing.Weneverdiscusseditmuchmore,andeightdayslaterIwasgo
5、ne.Ihaveseveralcloserelativeswhohavebeeninthemilitaryduringwartime.MyfatherandunclewereinWorldWarII,andtwobrothersandasisterservedinVietnam.WhileIwasextremelyuneasyaboutleavingmyfamilytoservemycountryinawarzone,IknewitwaswhatIhadtodo.Iprayedthatthiswouldmakemyfatherp
6、roudofme.MyfatherisveryinvolvedintheVeteransofForeignWarsorganizationandhasalwaysbeenforastrongmilitary.IwasnoteligibletojointheVeteransofForeignWarsbecauseIhadnotbeeninawarzone—afactthatalwaysmademefeellikeIdidn’tmeasureupinmyfather’seyes.ButnowhereIwas,hisyoungests
