2、ocialsituation,soTherearethreewavesofimmigrantsinAmericanhistory.Asweknow,thefirstwaveofimmigrantshappenedintheseventeenthcentury,andmostimmigrantswerefromWesternEurope.Atthattime,InBritish,peoplewhowanttohaveabetterlifewerenotprohibitedfromimmigrating,somanypeoplemovedtoAmerica,ther
3、eforethefirstpermanentsettlementwastheBritish.Atthesametime,theFrench,Spanish,andDutchalsoimmigratedtotheUS,butonlyafewofpeoplemovedtoUS,andabout20percentofthepopulationwasAfricanAmerican.Aswiththerapiddevelopmentofeconomywhichimmigrationwascontrolledinthe1790s,theNaturalizationActof
4、1798requiredimmigrantstoliveintheUSacertainyearsbeforetheybecamecitizenstolimitdensitiesofimmigrants.Nowlet’slookatthesecondwaveofimmigrantwhichhappenedbetween1840and1920.Duringthiswave,duetotheindustrialrevolution,it’sbroughtabigchangeforimmigrant,andabout80percentofimmigrantswhoabo
5、ut37millionpeoplewerefromalloverEurope.ChineseworkerscontractedtoworkinAmericancompanybeforetheylefthome.Inthe1891,tocontroltheimmigrant,theINSonlyopenedintheEllisIsland,howeverbetween1892and1954,whenEillisIslandwasclosed,about12millionimmigrantsenteredthroughthere,mostfromEurope.The
6、n,theUSgovernmentlimitedtoimmigrantwithlawswhichpassedaquotasystem.Finally,thethirdwaveintheperiodfrom1965tothepresenttime,in1965,withthequotasystemwasabolishedsothatduring1970sand1980s,about80percentoftheimmigrantswerefromLatinAmericaandAsia. Eachyear,after1965,manypeoplewantedtoimm
7、igratetotheUS. ThisledtotheImmigrationActof1990,whichraisedtheyearlylimitfrom290,000to700,000. However,from1990tothepresent,theactualnumberhascloserto1million,itispreciselybecausemanypeoplerealizethatthecountry’sgreateststrengthisthediversityofitspeople.So,theoldmeltingpotidealhasbee
